Last month 4 birds were rescued in Herm which came into the care of the GSPCA.

3 young House Martins were found after their nest had broke from where it was putting them at great risk.

Also a very young Swallow was found in need by a visitor to the island  and again due to the risks to the young bird he like the House Martins were transported on the Travel trident to Guernsey and on to the care here at the GSPCA.

After around the clock feeds the young birds started to fly and it was decided that today was the day to return them to where they hatched, fit, well and old enough to go back to the wild.

Beckie Bailey GSPCA Animal Care Assistant transported the 4 young birds to the Travel trident where they made the trip across the Little Russell.

Beckie said “I transported the 4 birds to the Travel Trident today where they went to meet Nicole Nolan who is a resident in Herm and was the finder and carer for the House Martins overnight.”

“When she found them originally advice we gave she cared for them overnight and brought them over to the GSPCA the following day.”

“After much care it has been wonderful to see them grow into young birds ready for the wild and it was amazing them to take them part way for their release.”

“Earlier this evening Nicole released all 4 birds back in Herm the same location she found them.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “As young birds start to fledge here at the GSPCA they start to become very cheeky trying to fly out of their enclosures when you are trying to feed them.”

“When they get to this stage it is a big indicator they are nearly ready for release.”

“Swallows and House Martins are incredible birds and their migration journeys they take each autumn and spring is breath taking.”

“For all of the team at the GSPCA it has been a real joy to help these little birds and we wish them all the best back in the wild.”

“Many of the baby birds that arrive go straight into an intensive care unit all of which are currently full and you can see where we buy them from by visiting https://brinsea.co.uk/small-animal-care/tlc-intensive-care-incubators/tlc-30-advance/ .”

“We have a Just Giving page which we are trying to raise funds to purchase new and additional units which you can support by visiting https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/gspcaintensivecare .”

“Recently we had an amazing surprise as someone had bought one directly for us and it arrived in the post and has been an incredible help at the GSPCA with so many babies cared in it.”
