Following last year’s overwhelming response to the GSPCA’s firework survey—with nearly 2,300 completed responses—concerns remain high about the distress caused to pets, farm animals, and wildlife by over 200 private firework events held across just 16 days.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported in 2024, but the emotional and behavioral toll on animals was significant. To better understand and address these challenges, the GSPCA has launched two new surveys for 2025: one to gather general feedback on firework experiences, and another to report specific incidents affecting animals.

GSPCA Incident or Upset Report due to Fireworks https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9CY983S

GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne shared “Fireworks may be a celebration for some, but for many animals they are a source of fear and confusion.”

“They have already started and with over 50 events listed on gov.gg/fireworks more are being added daily.”

“We’re asking islanders to help us monitor the impact again this year by completing our surveys.”

“Last year nearly 3% of our entire population completed the survey an incredible just short of 2300 and this year as well as an updated version for islanders to complete with thoughts on drone shows added after an amazing Liberation Day event.”

“We have also launched a report form survey for incidents that occur so we can track any problems or issues that happen.”

“You can complete this each time a problem occurs and only takes a few minutes to complete and means we can see the extent of the concerns across the island.”

“The more we understand, the better we can advocate for change and support those affected.”

“Please check out our advice to help keep your pets and animals safe this November.”

GSPCA Firework Advice for Pet Owners

To help protect animals during firework season, the GSPCA recommends:

  • Keep pets indoors during firework displays and ensure windows and doors are closed.
  • Create a safe space with familiar bedding and toys to help reduce anxiety.
  • Use calming aids such as pheromone diffusers or anxiety wraps if needed.
  • Avoid leaving pets alone—your presence can be reassuring.
  • Ensure microchip details are up to date in case pets flee in fear.
  • Speak to your vet if your pet has a history of severe firework anxiety.

Farmers, large animal owners and wildlife carers are also encouraged to monitor animals closely and report any unusual behavior or incidents via the GSPCA’s new incident survey.

The GSPCA continues to work with local authorities and communities to promote responsible firework use and raise awareness of its impact and had a recent meeting to discuss challenges and upcoming safety for the upcoming period.

The States of Guernsey recently promoted this advice on their facebook:

The States of Guernsey

With bonfire and fireworks season fast approaching, islanders are being reminded of the rules and general guidance around hosting bonfires and setting up fireworks displays on and around Bonfire Night on Wednesday 5th November.

Read more at https://gov.gg/guidance-rules-bonfires-fireworks-Oct-2025

Guernsey Airport recently promoted this also on their facebook page to also let them know about upcoming events withing a certain area:

Guernsey Airport

Anyone planning a firework display within three nautical miles of the airport should register their event with Guernsey Ports as soon as possible.

For the safety of aviation operations, it is important that we are aware of all such displays. Whilst the risk of collision with aircraft is small, fireworks have the potential to cause distraction during flight operations, especially when launched within the vicinity of Guernsey Airport or around the flight approach.

Organisers of firework displays should complete this short form as soon as possible, if it falls within the area marked in red: https://bit.ly/4fgTtej

We want everyone to have fun and, most importantly, stay safe on Bonfire Night. By registering your display, it helps to ensure an enjoyable event for you and an uneventful one for us!
