With Guernsey experiencing a spell of hot and dry weather, the GSPCA is urging islanders to lend a helping hand to local wildlife by putting out clean, fresh water for hedgehogs, birds, and other wild animals.
The lack of rainfall and soaring temperatures can make it extremely difficult for wildlife to find the water they need to survive. Small animals such as hedgehogs are particularly vulnerable during dry spells, as their usual water sources evaporate or dry up completely. Birds, too, can struggle to stay hydrated, especially fledglings and nesting adults.
Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said:
"During prolonged dry weather, wildlife can suffer greatly from dehydration.”
“Something as simple as a shallow bowl of water in your garden can make a huge difference.”
“It’s a small act of kindness that can help save lives."
“We have been helping many hedgehogs especially that have been dehydrated which are currently housed in our temporary facilities while the BIG BUILD takes place to build a new Wildlife Hospital.”
The GSPCA recommends the following simple steps to support wildlife during the heat:
- Place shallow dishes of clean water around your garden, ideally in shady spots.
- Use pebbles or small stones in bowls to allow insects and small creatures to climb out safely if they fall in.
- Keep water bowls clean and topped up regularly to avoid the spread of disease.
- Provide food such as meaty cat or dog food for hedgehogs (never milk or bread).
- Avoid using pesticides and slug pellets, which can harm hedgehogs and birds.
The GSPCA continues to care for many hedgehogs and wild birds in need, with wildlife numbers increasing during the summer months. The public's help is vital in reducing the strain on the charity and protecting Guernsey's native species.
"Every garden can become a small sanctuary during the summer months," added Mr Byrne.
"Together, we can all do our bit to ensure our wildlife stays safe and healthy."
