Hedgehog "Snotty" Recovering in GSPCA Intensive Care After Handing Himself in at St John Ambulance Station
A poorly hedgehog, now affectionately named "Snotty", is recovering in the GSPCA's Intensive Care Unit after effectively handing himself in at the St John Ambulance Station late last night.
The hedgehog was discovered by the St John team, who quickly realised he needed help and kindly transported him to the GSPCA Wildlife Hospital facilities late in the evening, where GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne was on duty.
On arrival, Snotty was examined, treated and had several ticks removed before being settled into an Intensive Care Unit for ongoing monitoring and care.
Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said:
"We are incredibly grateful to the St John team for spotting that Snotty needed help and bringing him to us so quickly. He was not in the best of condition when he arrived and required treatment, including the removal of several ticks, before being settled into intensive care."
"At the moment he is resting comfortably and receiving the care he needs. Cases like this are a reminder of just how important it is for people to act quickly when they see wildlife in difficulty."
"Hedgehogs are one of the most common wildlife patients we care for at the GSPCA. Every year we help hundreds of sick, injured and orphaned wild animals, and we would encourage anyone who finds a hedgehog that appears unwell to contact us for advice as soon as possible."
The GSPCA is also urging islanders to familiarise themselves with the signs that a hedgehog may require urgent assistance.
According to the charity's hedgehog advice guidance, hedgehogs seen out during daylight hours, lying exposed, appearing thin or wobbly, suffering wounds, limping, carrying flies or maggots, or showing bald patches and spine loss all require immediate attention. The GSPCA asks anyone who discovers a sick or injured hedgehog to contact the charity on 01481 257261 for advice and assistance.
The charity also reminds gardeners and householders that hedgehogs face many everyday dangers including strimmers, drains, litter, netting, slug pellets, rodenticides, bonfires and garden ponds without escape routes.
Whilst caring for patients such as Snotty, the GSPCA continues to make significant progress with the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal. Construction of the new Wildlife Hospital is advancing well, with the roof structure nearing completion and solar panels currently being installed. Foundations have also recently begun for the new kennel block, marking another major milestone in what is the largest construction project in the charity's history. The appeal has already raised more than £2 million, although a further £2 million is still needed to complete the project and associated works.
Steve added:
"Every wildlife patient we admit, including hedgehogs like Snotty, relies on the generosity of our community. The new Wildlife Hospital will transform the way we care for thousands of wild animals every year, but we still need support to complete the project and continue helping the animals that arrive at our doors day and night."
