For many many many decades the GSPCA has been helping lost, found and feral cats around the Bailiwick of Guernsey.
In the 1990’s there were incredible numbers of feral cats but thanks to a huge amount of work by the GSPCA and also Guernsey Animal Aid when they operated the numbers are extremely low, but the GSPCA are regularly asked to help feral, lost and found cats.
Sadly a number of the GSPCA Cat Traps have gone missing or been damaged after many years of use and we are appealing for help to locate and fund replacements.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “At the GSPCA we help 100’s of cats every year in many ways.”
“This includes using traps to catch potential lost and found cats as well as assisting when needed with feral or semi feral cats which need trapping and neutering before the colony rises in numbers.”
“Just a single female cat if there is an unneutered tom in the area in one year could have as many as 18 kittens in one year and those kittens can have kittens themselves at 6 months so the numbers can spiral if not controlled in the right way.”
“We rent our traps out to the public when they need them to help lost or found cats as well as helping catch ferals.”
“Sadly a number of the traps have gone missing or been damaged and we are appealing for information for anyone that knows where any might have been taken as well as funding for new traps.”
“The cat traps we are looking for are around 2-3 feet long and 12-18 inches square and if you know where one is please either return it to the GSPCA or let us know via email admin@gspca.org.gg or call 257261.”
“If you would like to fund one they are just over £120 each with delivery and you can donate by popping in, post, calling or via this link https://giving.gg/donate/charity/2/Guernsey-Society-for-the-Prevention-of-Cruelty-to-Animals-(GSPCA) and please make a note to indicate it is for a cat trap or you can see them here https://www.mdcexports.co.uk/product/eeziset-cat-trap/ .”
“We have helped cats and kittens from Sark as well as all over Guernsey this year and with your help we can continue to do so, find the traps and with your kindness replacing those that are sadly unable to be repaired.”
“It is incredible to think in the 1990’s we use to catch an average 150 cats around Guernsey many of which were ferals and rehome an average 400-600 cats and kittens a year.”
“Thankfully most owners neuter their cats to prevent these high numbers and also the other challenging issues which unneutered cats going out in Guernsey can cause from the unneutered toms fighting to the challenges we use to see with high numbers of feline aids and leukaemia which has ben much lower in recent decades.”
Ali Le Huray Senior GSPCA Animal Care Supervisor and Welfare Officer said “We are extremely busy at this time of year with cats and have many looking for good homes.”
“We also see more kittens at this time of year which means the traps are more likely to be out helping areas where there maybe ferals or cats in need of help such as possible injured cats spotted in an area or possible strays that aren’t being cared for.”
“If a cat is looking healthy and is friendly but you think it might be lost then on our lost and found page we have a paper collar which can be used to write a note to ask if the cat is owned to call you to put your mind at rest but where there are are concerns please do get in touch with us here at the GSPCA.”
