Back in late July the GSPCA Ambulance Collection Officer Geoff George helped rescue a baby Barn Owl in Castel.
The young bird was severely thin and very close to loosing her life.
Thankfully with the skills of the team at the GSPCA and an intensive care unit the young bird was saved and nursed back to health.
After a period inside she was transferred to an outside aviary where she learnt to fly and forage for food.
As she grew stronger and her weight increased the GSPCA team monitored her progress with a wildlife camera.
The GSPCA would like to thank both Millard & Co Ltd and Greenman Motorcycle Club for their amazing efforts in the raffle for the Shakey Byrne Helmet recently.
A grand total of £900 was raised and split between the GSPCA and Headway, two local Guernsey charities.
Earlier today Amy and her 9 friends came up to the GSPCA for a Birthday guided tour.
Amy who has just turned 11 years of age asked her mum earlier in the year if she could have a tour at the GSPCA with her friends as part of her birthday.
At the Shelter we kindly obliged and for a donation of £50 Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager took the group around earlier today.
From seeing Wee Billy a young hedgehog to meeting the tortoise, stroking Monkey a diabetic cat to smelling the ferrets the girls all had a lovely day.
On Wednesday we had 14 new faces attend the Shelter for a Volunteer Induction and to find out how they can help.
From school placements to those looking to help out for a few hours each week those attending wanted to help from on the front desk to cleaning the animals out.
The evening started at 6.30pm and GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne not only talked of the work of the Shelter, he also went through an induction so all knew how to work and help safely at the GSPCA.
The GSPCA’s latest animal accommodation has been put through a phase of testing and is now open thanks to Sure and other build partners.
Sure’s Community Foundation made a donation of £2600 to the project in order to become a build partner following an application for funds from the GSPCA.
The new building has space for over 100 animals at any one time and the pens are able to be arranged in different formations to cater for different species.
Every year the GSPCA are called out and receive stray dogs and cats during periods of fireworks that have either escaped or run off due to being scared by the loud bangs they make.
Last year the GSPCA launched our firework calendar which is an online record of firework displays and events which pet owners can easily visit to see the upcoming occasions which could scare their pets.
Today is Feral Cat Day and we are appealing for those that can offer special homes for some of our very special cats.
Recently the GSPCA has been involve in rescuing 4 semi-feral kittens that found their way to our site in St Andrews.
Cherry B, Bimbo, Whiskey (pictured) and Boots arrived only 2 weeks ago with their mother cat.
At the time the kittens were just being weaned off of their mother at 8 weeks and thankfully we managed to catch them quickly and they are currently in our care.
6 weeks on from the 25 Slovakian puppies being detained at the GSPCA, many are wondering the outcome for the 18 pups that after the court case remained the possessions of the individuals involved in moving them from Slovakia to the UK.
We are currently awaiting to hear from the law officers who will inform us towards the end of next week the outcome.
We are hopeful at the Shelter and indeed all involved that they will be allowed to remain here in Guernsey and we will disclose the information as soon as we are aware.
At the GSPCA we are looking for volunteers to help with Flag Day event on Saturday 24th October at two Marks & Spencers stores.
If you are able to help us out we would really appreciate it, please could you contact Sarah Ozanne at the Shelter with the time slots and places you can help with.
We are looking at 2 hour slots but anything is appreciated. The slots are:
