On site at the GSPCA we have four resident tortoise.

Some have found their way to us having been found as strays and others have come in after their owners sadly passing away.

Yesterday the last two tortoise were woken up from their hibernation with the warm spell that is due and spring on its way.

Hilda our oldest tortoise woke up some weeks ago on the coldest day of the year and decided that her sleep was long enough. Hilda is a 61 year old spur-thighed tortoise and wouldn't go into hibernation until early December.

In Guernsey the GSPCA estimate that there are approximately 8,000 to 10,000 pet dogs and also the same number in cats owned.

This estimation has recently been reinforced with the Petlog statistical data which shows in their figures that Guernsey is an island of cat owners.

The Mirror recently looked at cat microchipping data from Petlog to determine where most cats live, and the most popular cats in each area.

It's World Spay Day - The importance of neutering your pet

Submitted by Steve on 09:31, 24th Feb, 2015 | 0

The last Tuesday of February is World Spay Day.

With tens of thousands of pets owned in Guernsey and across the EU 61 million dogs and 66 million cats it is important that unwanted litters are avoided.

In Guernsey we are lucky in recent years to rarely see puppies and the number of unwanted kittens have slowly declined.

Unfortunately the numbers of ferrets and rabbits have increased and the GSPCA each year has seen an increase of unwanted adults and youngsters.
