Today marks World Animal Road Accident Awareness Day, and the GSPCA is highlighting the need for increased awareness and care to protect animals on Guernsey’s roads.
Each year, the GSPCA responds to an average of 200 cats that are either killed or seriously injured in road accidents across the island. In total, the charity helps around 1,000 cats annually, from those needing homes to those lost, found, or involved in welfare investigations.
But it’s not just cats—every week, the GSPCA is called out to assist with loose farm animals, dogs, and a wide range of wildlife, many of which have suffered injuries due to road incidents. These accidents not only cause distress and suffering to animals but also pose risks to drivers and the wider community.
Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said:
“Road accidents involving animals are sadly a regular occurrence in Guernsey. Every year we see hundreds of cats and countless wildlife affected, and it’s heartbreaking. Today is a reminder to all road users to slow down, stay alert, and help protect the animals we share our island with. Whether it’s a cat crossing the road or a hedgehog trying to reach safety, every life matters. We urge everyone to take extra care and report any injured or stray animals to the GSPCA so we can help.”
The GSPCA continues to work tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals affected by road accidents and other emergencies. The charity also encourages pet owners to microchip their animals and ensure they are kept safe, especially near busy roads.
