Elvis the Squirrel Spotted Again and Thriving in St Sampson

The GSPCA has received multiple reports over the last week of "Elvis" the grey squirrel, the island's most famous wildlife stowaway, being seen around the St Sampson area.

The sightings suggest Elvis is looking healthy, active and, according to those who have spotted him, extremely fast, making him difficult to photograph and even harder to track.

Guernsey has no native squirrel population, largely due to the lack of extensive, continuous woodland required to sustain squirrels. In fact, grey squirrels are not native to Europe, having originally been introduced from North America.

Elvis first captured the island's attention on 24th February 2025 when the grey squirrel accidentally arrived in Guernsey after apparently hitching a ride in a vehicle. The unexpected visitor sparked a major search and rescue operation involving the GSPCA and the States of Guernsey in the St Sampson and Delancey areas.

As grey squirrels are classed as an invasive species, authorities are legally unable to release them into the wild if captured. Following extensive efforts to locate and safely trap Elvis, and after months without confirmed sightings, the operation was eventually scaled back, although the GSPCA were not part of this as Elvis was classed as a healthy animal and was doing well and we would have only got involved if he was sick or injured.

However, recent reports suggest that Elvis has not only survived but appears to be thriving.

GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne said:

"When Elvis first arrived on the island in February last year, he certainly caused a stir. We received many calls and sightings about him at the GSPCA.”

"After a long period without any reports, many people wondered what had happened to him, so it has been amazing to receive several sightings over the last week from around St Sampson. Everyone reporting him has said he looks very healthy and is incredibly fast.”

"As far as we are aware, Elvis remains the first and only squirrel to live wild in Guernsey, certainly in living memory. Guernsey simply doesn't have a native squirrel population, which makes every sighting particularly unusual and exciting.”

"He has become a bit of a local celebrity and many people have followed his story since he first arrived. It is remarkable that after all this time he continues to evade capture and appears to be doing so well."

The GSPCA would be pleased to hear from anyone who spots Elvis and asks that any sightings are reported with as much detail as possible, including the location, date, time and, if possible, photographs and email [email protected] or call 257261.

For now, it seems that Guernsey's one and only wild squirrel continues to keep residents guessing while enjoying life as one of the island's most elusive and talked-about wildlife residents.
