GSPCA Team Tours Progress of New Wildlife Hospital as Build Reaches Halfway Mark
On a beautifully sunny Wednesday morning, GSPCA staff were given a guided tour of the ongoing construction of the charity’s new Wildlife Hospital — a landmark project that is now halfway complete and has reached the midpoint of its £3.7 million fundraising target for the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal.
Small groups of the team gathered near the site office where GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne, joined by staff from Breton, welcomed everyone and provided an overview of the project’s progress. With the build now approximately 50% complete, Steve explained the importance of the next stages and the continued need to raise the remaining funds to finish the state‑of‑the‑art facility.
Once briefed, the team were split into groups, equipped with PPE, and taken on a detailed walkthrough of the sections currently taking shape. The tour began in the store area before moving into what will become the Wildlife Hospital’s kitchen, then along the central corridor that will eventually house a wide range of specialist rooms for wildlife casualties — from garden birds to hedgehogs and other small mammals.
Outside, staff were shown the dedicated areas where new aviaries will be built, along with plans for outdoor pools. The tour continued through the future reception area and past the new toilet facilities into the sea mammal and seabird corridor — a critical area especially for seal pups. The GSPCA recently released three rehabilitated pups and currently has four more in temporary facilities, making the new specialist areas essential for the future of marine rescue in Guernsey.
The visit concluded at the deep seal pools, located just beyond the oiled bird rooms, giving the team a real sense of the scale and importance of the new centre.
Words from Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager
“It was incredibly special to be able to take the team around the Wildlife Hospital site and show them just how far we’ve come. To be halfway through the build and halfway to our £3.7 million fundraising target is a huge milestone for the GSPCA and for wildlife care in Guernsey. Seeing the rooms, the pools, and the specialist spaces emerging really brings to life what this hospital will mean for the thousands of animals we help every year. All being well, we’re on track for completion towards the end of the year, and we’re so grateful to everyone who has supported the appeal so far. We still have a long way to go, but together we can make this world‑class facility a reality.”
Words from Yvonne Chauvel, GSPCA Supervisor
“Having had the honour of laying the first foundation stone, I can’t quite believe how much progress has been made. Walking through the corridors and seeing where every room will be, I was honestly overwhelmed. It’s absolutely wonderful, and it’s going to make such a difference for the wildlife of Guernsey and for our whole team. This hospital will transform the way we can care for injured and orphaned animals, and I’m so proud to see it taking shape.”
With the project now at its halfway point, the GSPCA continues to encourage individuals, businesses, and the community to support the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal. Every donation brings the charity closer to completing Guernsey’s first purpose‑built Wildlife Hospital, ensuring the island’s animals receive the best possible care for generations to come.
