Rescued Grey Seal Pups Glacier, Avalanche & Frosty Move to Next Stage of Rehabilitation
#GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal Progresses as Construction Reaches Halfway Point

The GSPCA is delighted to share a positive update on the six grey seal pups currently receiving specialist care at the Shelter. The three of the six recently rescued youngsters – Glacier, Avalanche and Frosty – have continued to make excellent progress and have now moved into the next stage of their rehabilitation, where they are enjoying the larger temporary outdoor pools designed to build strength, stamina, and confidence in swimming.

All three pups are eating extremely well and steadily gaining weight and condition, showing every sign that they are on the right track for their eventual return to the wild.

Meanwhile, our other three seal pups – Blizzard, Icicle and Iceberg Lettuce – are also improving every day. Although not quite ready to move outside, we are hopeful that with continued care, feeding, and monitoring, they will soon be strong enough to progress to the next stage.

This year’s seal admissions have been particularly demanding, and a detailed account of Iceberg Lettuce’s rescue and our ongoing care is available here:

Quote from the GSPCA Head of Marine Mammals

“The move for Glacier, Avalanche and Frosty went incredibly smoothly, and all three pups settled into the larger outdoor enclosure straight away. It’s wonderful to see them diving, swimming and exploring the bigger pool, which is such an important part of preparing them for life back in the wild. Their progress has been fantastic, and the team is thrilled with how well they are doing.”

#GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal – Construction Halfway to Completion

Alongside our busy rescue season, the GSPCA continues to work on the largest redevelopment project in our 153‑year history. The #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal is now well underway, with the new buildings’ walls nearly up to roof height. We are delighted to report that we have raised over half of the required funds – but we still urgently need the public’s help to complete the project.

Quote from GSPCA Manager, Steve Byrne

“We are now over halfway through our biggest-ever redevelopment, and thanks to the incredible generosity of the public, we have raised more than half of the £3.7 million needed. But we still have a long way to go. With increasing pressures on our services – especially during demanding times like seal pup season – this build is absolutely essential. We’re hopeful the project will be completed towards the end of the year, and every donation truly makes a difference. Thank you to everyone who continues to support us.”

What to Do If You Find a Seal Pup

Seal pup season can be a worrying time for the public, and we rely on islanders to help keep both seals and people safe. If you find a seal pup:

  • Do not approach or attempt to move it – seal pups bite hard, and human interaction can cause stress or injury.
  • Keep dogs on leads and children well away.
  • Observe from a distance and look for signs of distress, injury, or abandonment.
  • Call the GSPCA immediately on 01481 257261 so our team can assess the situation.
  • If safe, you may send a photo from afar to assist our staff in determining the next steps.

Most importantly, please never push a seal pup back into the sea. Pups hauled out on beaches may be resting, unwell, or waiting for their mothers.

How You Can Help

With six pups currently in our care—each consuming significant quantities of specialist fish and requiring intensive hands‑on attention—the cost to the GSPCA is substantial. Donations toward seal rehabilitation and the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal are incredibly appreciated.
