This Thursday, 28th July 2016 the GSPCA undertakes one of its biggest moves, the last stage in the rescue and rehabilitation of Olivia.
Olivia, a large loggerhead turtle, is finally traveling south to complete the rehabilitation process prior to release in the warm waters off Gran Canaria.
Olivia, who nearly died back in March was found in cold shock on a wintery beach on the west coast of Guernsey. If the GSPCA had not been alerted and been able to rescue her quickly she would have surely died.
Today the GSPCA said goodbye to a wonderful, dedicated and loyal member of staff who has served the GSPCA for over 10 years.
Collette Pattimore who has worked primarily in the boarding cats department of the GSPCA has been an invaluable part time member of staff that we will all miss.
Collette retired today after 10 years of service and the animals, customers and team will all miss her care and hard work.
This week the GSPCA have been joined by Anglia Ruskin University who are carrying out a study at the GSPCA.
The study is a Mars Inc/Waltham Foundation funded project, which aims to increase accuracy and agreement between staff when assessing the quality of life of cats housed in Shelters and other types of kenneled housing.
Today the GSPCA welcomed 6 Voluntourists from the Crystal Symphony.
The ladies that helped out were Katherine O’Neil, Shirley Kushner, Lisa Brown, Amber Way, Juliana Way & Susan Carter all of which were from Canada and arrived just after 9am.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager met the group who after a short induction, a gift of a GSPCA t-shirt and a quick photo with Betty the bull terrier were set to work around the GSPCA.
The group helped clean out the birds and sweep out the rabbit pens, cleaned the cats and walked the dogs.
Once again we joined the Taste of Guernsey Seafront Sunday on Sunday.
It was their third Seafront Sunday of 2016 and once again we are hugely grateful to them for letting us join them for what was a great and very popular day.
Our stall at the Taste Seafront Sunday is likely we will near Thomas de la Rue with all of our fun games and tombolas which helps raise hundreds of pounds for the animals in our care.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "The Taste Seafront Sundays are always great fun and we had a lovely day meeting lots of new friends and many regular supporters."
On Saturday 23rd July the Red Cross held their Grand Summer Fete by kind permission of His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor Vice Admiral Sir Ian and Lady Corder.
The event was hosted by Island FM’s Josh Gabriel and there was plenty of stalls, tombola and teas.
The GSPCA were kindly invited and we had a wonderful afternoon at this fantastic annual event.
There were dance demonstrations by B Creative which entertained the crowds as well as family fun and children’s games throughout the afternoon.
On Friday the GSPCA joined the Guernsey Round Table Harbour Carnival 2016 for a fantastic evening.
Their main beneficiary was the Guernsey Sailing Trust and once again the Guernsey Round Table was supported by RBC Wealth Management.
Events included duck races, dingy races, paddle board race, tug of war and man powered flight all culminating in a spectacular fireworks display.
The GSPCA always love attending the Harbour Carnival as it always proves one of the best events in our calendar.
At the end of 2015 beginning of 2016 Seb Goman joined the team at the GSPCA to help primarily on kennels but has been learning to work and care for the animals in the many other departments. Seb also helps to ensure we have 24/7 cover at the Shelter and has become a fantastic member of the team with her caring and helpful nature.
In April 2016 Ashleigh Le Page joined the team and has also been learning the many departments at the GSPCA working primarily caring for the cats but also learning to care for the 300+ animals at the GSPCA.
Last Friday the GSPCA welcomed students from St Sampsons High School for a visit and activities day.
Sarah Creasey the Welfare and Education Officer met the students at the front the GSPCA Animal Shelter before showing the students the facilities in St Andrews and getting them involved helping around site.
The GSPCA have been based at our current site since 1929 and the children learnt about the animals in our care and the work that is carried out 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
With the schools breaking up for the summer we have guided tours planned next week.
