Lots of interest in volunteering at the Careers Show 2016

Submitted by Steve on 10:15, 14th Apr, 2016 | 0

Last Tuesday the GSPCA took a stall to the Careers Show 2016 for the fourth time and were overwhelmed by inquiries.

Although the Shelter rarely has vacancies the GSPCA are always looking for volunteers to help in a variety of areas and this was of a huge interest to many of the visitors at the Careers Show.

For many of the Year 9 students it is the first time they are able to help at the Shelter, as to become a volunteer with animals at the Shelter the minimum age is 14 years.

This meant that hoards of Year 9's swamped the GSPCA stand to find out how they could help.

Today is World Stray Day and we have a number of strays arrived in the last few days - microchipping only £4.99 at the GSPCA

Submitted by Steve on 10:32, 4th Apr, 2016 | 0

Today is World Stray Day and at the GSPCA we help strays all year round here in Guernsey.

Just this weekend we've helped dogs to ferrets and there are many pets and farm animals that escape and need the help of the Animal Shelter.

With around 200 stray dogs and over 1000 strays helped every year by the GSPCA we face challenges on a daily basis reuniting them with their owners.

This month England, Scotland and Wales will be bringing in compulsory microchipping for dogs.

Jubilation's for Jubilee who is now named Bilee and in a loving new home

Submitted by Steve on 15:20, 1st Apr, 2016 | 0

Last May an injured long haired black and white cat was rescued and brought into the GSPCA on the Liberation weekend.

Found near Castel Hospital we named the cat Jubilee who had an awful bite wound and eye injury which was not easiy cured.  He needed many months of care and vet treatment and as no owner came forward after some months when the 3 year old cat was healthy enough he was put up for rehoming.

He was very difficult to handle at first and with his injuries meaning regular treatments it took sometime before he would trust the team.

Whilst they were there they were helping raise funds for the many animals at the GSPCA.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "We'd like to thank Carolyn Amer from Guernsey Gifts for the wonderful donation of £50 which she raised through the sale of her goods at the OSA Pop Up Shop in Smith Street."

We will all remember him - our thoughts are with the family and friends of Peter Brehaut

Submitted by Steve on 14:45, 30th Mar, 2016 | 0

Yesterday a number of the GSPCA team attended Le Foulon Chapel to remember Peter Francis Brehaut at his funeral service who sadly passed away on the 9th March 2016 at the age of 59 years.

Pete joined the GSPCA in July of 2015 and had been helping nearly 4 mornings each and every week for 8 months.  He was really appreciated by all of the team for his hard work and dedication.

Pete always enjoyed working with the ferrets the most and also enjoyed a nice sun rise when they occurred on his way into the Shelter.

Warning very poorly baby hedgehog at the GSPCA

Submitted by Steve on 19:59, 28th Mar, 2016 | 0

On Tuesday a very poorly baby hedgehog or hoglet was brought into the GSPCA.

At only 3 to 4 weeks of age 'Diddy' as she's been named was covered in mange, very thin and also full of fly eggs and tiny maggots.

On arrival GSPCA staff Sarah Ozanne and Geoff George were on hand to help care for and clean off the fly eggs and maggots.

For the first few days the tiny hoglet was very weak and was taken home by Sarah to care for around the clock.

Nearly a week on and we are pleased to say that Diddy is doing well and growing stronger each day.
