Baby bird advice from the GSPCA

At the GSPCA we are extremely busy with the daily arrival of baby birds needing hand rearing that have been found or rescued.

Baby birds are always where possible best left in the wild to be raised by their parents.

A wonderful EDABL Seafront Sunday thank you all that supported

Sunday 16th June the GSPCA attended the EDABL Seafront Sunday and we wanted to say a huge thanks to all involved and supported.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “On the 16th June Dylan and I took our GSPCA stall to the EDABL Seafront Sunday and had a wonderful day.”

“We raised around £500 and spoke to those interested in supporting our work, volunteering and even adopting an animal to mention a few of the wonderful outcomes.”

“A huge thanks to the EDABL team and all that supported and made it such a great day.”

Huge thanks from the GSPCA to all involved and supported the Government House Charities Fete #WithoutUs

The 2024 Charities Fete at Government House was held on the 25th June.

The GSPCA along with 40+ organisations took part on what was a great day raising funds and promoting the work of lots of great causes as well as highlighting the #WithoutUs campaign launched by the Association of Guernsey Charities earlier this year. 

This prestigious event has grown in popularity over recent years, and attracts large numbers of visitors. 

There was entertainment, refreshments, lots do see, do and it was a lovely day.

New boarding procedures started & cost increase 1st August at GSPCA and would you like to trial our new online booking system?

Each year at the GSPCA we review the costs of our services and from the 1st August a cost of living will start to account for the rising costs to care for your beloved pets when they stay with us.

Boarding is one of the main income stream to the GSPCA other than donations and the team love looking after your pets to help us to carry out our animal welfare and rescue work.”

States advertise first ever Animal Health & Welfare Officer as GSPCA continue into 151st year investigating animal cruelty

On the 24th June the States of Guernsey announced their first ever Animal Health & Welfare Officer vacancy.

This is a new position in Guernsey and with eh closing date being the 5th July there is only a short window left to apply.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “The GSPCA has been investigating animal cruelty and welfare for over 151 years in Guernsey.”

“From illegally transported puppies to reptile cruelty sadly we do get involved with cruelty cases in Guernsey each year and investigate an average 1000 causes of concern each year.”

Every year we hear of firework related incidents involving animals and children. While fireworks may be exciting and pretty to look at and its fun to celebrate many celebrations with a bang, we must put our safety, the safety of our pets and the local wildlife first. 

Friday 5th July at around 930pm there is a private firework display planned at Mont Arrive, St Peter Port, GY1 2AQ so please ensure your animals are safe and prepare for the unusual sounds and sights they might be subjected too.

Specsavers teams seeing the GSPCA is helped out in lots of ways – huge thanks from all our team and animals #WithoutUs

The GSPCA are hugely grateful to the staff at Specsavers who have given so much time to help animals and the work of the GSPCA over recent months.

Tim Pellett GSPCA Training and Community Officer said “On the 15th May, 4th June and 8th June we have greeted amazing volunteers from Specsavers.”

“On the 15th May we had 3 wonderful volunteers from Specsavers who helped with decorating our Chapel of Rest which is a peaceful area bereaved owners can spend time with their animals such as the many killed on our roads.”

Riley one very lucky hedgehog after being caught in a cable tie – GSPCA urge everyone to help hedgehogs in Guernsey this Summer

In the late hours of Sunday 2 hedgehogs arrived at the GSPCA.

One a juvenile who was healthy was found next to another unable to move due to a cable tie trapping the poorly hedgehog.

Both were found next to one another and were kindly brought into the GSPCA by some caring members of public where Manager Steve Byrne was on duty.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Late on Sunday I had a call out as two hedgehogs arrived at the GSPCA.”

Showcasing traditional Island crafts, favourite foods, music and dancing, this is a gathering enjoyed by generations of Islanders and return visitors since the 1970s.
