Only days after the GSPCA warn about fishing waste, another bird dies due to a fish hook

Submitted by Steve on 20:02, 22nd Jul, 2014 | 0

Last week at the GSPCA we issued a warning on waste and rubbish injuring animals, especially those at sea.

On Sunday the GSPCA were called out to an injured gannet at Port Soif.

Emma Trousdale from the GSPCA responded in the ambulance to rescue a gannet that had a fish hook through her eye.

Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said "We rescue and help animals 24 hours a day 7 days a week, but the gannet rescued on Sunday must have been in a great deal of pain and it is hard to say how long the fish hook had been through the eye."

Hot Cars Kill Dogs - As the hot weather continues please think of your pets

Submitted by Steve on 14:04, 22nd Jul, 2014 | 0

With another sunny week ahead of us the GSPCA want to ensure all pet owners take care of their animals.

The GSPCA during hot weather always receive reports from concerned members of the public that have seen dogs locked in cars and other animals in glass houses.

With the warm weather and direct sunlight, dogs in cars are potentially in a situation where you could kill your pet if it is left, regardless of the situation.

Yesterday the GSPCA were called to an injured juvenile gull that had been caught in fishing line.

GSPCA staff had tried to catch the young gull on a number of occasions and yesterday GSPCA Warden Dave Brook managed to secure the disabled bird.

The bird which was rushed to the GSPCA Animal Shelter had fine fishing netting caught extremely tightly around the birds left leg to such a point it had cut into the skin, become swollen and lame.

The GPSCA would like to thank the children and teachers at Vale Infants who have been raising money for the Animal Shelter.  Each year group was given £5 and they had to try and turn this into £50.

Each year group did extremely well and here are the results and how they managed to raise funds to help animals in Guernsey

Reception raised £40.85. They put on a games day and charged 20p go. Games included guessing how many sweets were in a jar and picking floating ducks out of a paddling pool.
