The GSPCA helps an average 3000 wild animals every year and we never know what we will help next.

Last month a rescued frog from a cat attach was brought into the GSPCA from Clos du Villocq.

Jack Le Moigne GSPCA Animal Care Assistant tells us the story ‘Frank is a beloved frog that was brought into us on the 7th of October after sustaining some injuries after a cat attack.

The family that brought in Frank had been enjoying watching him in their garden throughout the summer and had been calling him Frank. One day, their cat got a little too curious about the garden resident and unfortunately Frank had acquired some serious injuries in the scuffle. Having grown quite fond of Frank and accepting him as a little member of the family, Frank was rushed to the GSPCA and we were asked to do whatever we could to save him.

This special frog was brought to Isabelle Vets the next morning. He had a wound on the left side of his body and a pretty serious injury to the back right leg. Frank had lost quite a bit of skin, exposing the leg muscle underneath, but fortunately the muscle was intact! The veterinarian explained that attempting to close the wound would cause too much tension on the remaining skin and cause more damage. He was prescribed daily antibiotics and a special ointment to be applied to the wounds twice each day.

Frank returned to the GSPCA and was given the star treatment, given a little makeshift pond, some plants, plenty of wet and dry places to hide, and a plethora of insects to eat during his recovery in an intensive care unit.

Frank remained at the GSPCA for 22 days before veterinary approval for release. Though Frank’s family loved him dearly, they decided it best for Frank to find a new home, safe from the potential dangers of a curious cat.

Staff at the GSPCA knew exactly who to call. Mark and Penny Martin of Castel are fairly new residents to Guernsey. Upon their arrival they reached out to the GSPCA to form a partnership, offering their beautiful property as a release site for our wild animals. Complete with grassland, forest, a river, and a new lake, Mark and Penny could accommodate a plethora of wildlife! This season so far their property has become a new home of over 100 ducks, 6 rabbits, 6 mice, a few crows, a couple of hedgehogs, and they have also adopted 3 chickens. We called up Mark and he was happy to have Frank! He graciously came to collect our little frog and released him on their property, where he’ll live out the rest of his exciting, special life.’

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Jack and the team did an incredible job caring for and rehabilitating Frank the frog who is now happily well and back in the wild.”

“We don’t get many frogs recued but when they are we are here to help.”

“The new Wildlife Hospital hasn’t got a frog rehab room built in, but like with Frank the team have the equipment and skills to give them exactly what they need to help get them back to the wild.”

“There are many ways to support our work and help animals like Frank from donating to their care via https://giving.gg/donate/charity/2/Guernsey-Society-for-the-Prevention-of-Cruelty-to-Animals-(GSPCA)to supporting our much needed Wildlife Hospital and other facilities https://www.gspca.org.gg/blog/gspca-biggest-build-appeal .”
