Today the GSPCA was called out to a seabird tangled in netting.

GSPCA staff member Beckie Bailey when she arrived at Petit Bot rescued the guillemot in a life threating situation as it was that badly tangled it wouldn’t have survived if it hadn’t been for the kind person discovering the bird and calling us out.

Beckie quickly transported it back to the GSPCA Animal Shelter where we are carrying out our essential work helping hundreds of animals.

When back at the Shelter the bird was freed from the green netting and is recovering well at the GSPCA.

Beckie Bailey GSPCA staff member said “The poor guillemot wrapped up in fishing net or crab pot material.”

“It was very dehydrated, weak and has a sore leg.”

“We have called the bird Kat and fringed crossed he makes a speedy recovery!”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Although we are in full lockdown like the other emergency services we are still having to work safely and help animals in need.”

“The team are taking all precautions for their safety and others wearing full PPE and regularly sanitising.”

“In 2020 we had an incredible 1488 birds through our care and a record breaking 729 hedgehogs not to mention many other wild animals and every day we help sick and injured wildlife.”

“Kat is so lucky but it is early days and we are doing all we can to get him back to the wild.”

“It is horrendous when we see animals injured by human waste.”

“Every year we see animals caught in netting and affected by things discarded or thrown away.”
