This Spring a lovely cat called Bertie came into our care.
The 7 year old cat was found as a stray with a number of health problems including his eyes not being in good health.
Anna Paint Senior Animal Care Assistant tells us of Berties story “Bertie came in to us as a stray in May and straight away we realised that he had a problem with his eye sight and he was in a poor condition, Bertie was sent straight to the vets to get checked over as blindness in cats can be caused by a number of issues.”
Last month 4 birds were rescued in Herm which came into the care of the GSPCA.
3 young House Martins were found after their nest had broke from where it was putting them at great risk.
Also a very young Swallow was found in need by a visitor to the island and again due to the risks to the young bird he like the House Martins were transported on the Travel trident to Guernsey and on to the care here at the GSPCA.
The GSPCA has been kept extremely busy with hundreds of animals arriving each month but one of the main casualties has been dehydrated and very poorly hedgehogs.
In just 3 hours on Friday evening 4 hedgehogs arrived 3 of which were extremely dehydrated, flat and thin for their age and size with the fourth pictured not so dehydrated but still very thin and covered in ticks.
Last week a group over 20 EY staff came along to the GSPCA to help with grounds around site at the Animal Shelter in St Andrews for the third year.
There is always so much to do at the GSPCA and the help the team from EY CI gave was a huge boost at what is always an extremely busy time of year.
Tim Pellett GSPCA Community and Training Officer said “It was great to greet, meet and et the lovely team from EY helping around the GSPCA last Thursday.”
“There were staff both locally and 15 flew over from Jersey to help.”
On the 29th May 2 staff from Man Fund Management (Guernsey) Limited attended the GSPCA to give up a day in the office to help with the work around the Shelter.
The day was started with a quick induction followed by a picture at the front of the GSPCA and were then set to work with GSPCA Community and Training Officer Tim Pellett.
Tim said “It was lovely to meet the staff from Man who worked really hard helping in many areas around the GSPCA and with the animals.”
Its not all about helping animals here at the GSPCA as recently we helped home 100’s of geranium all thank to the Old Government House Hotel and GFF Gardens.
GFF Gardens help the OGH with their gardening and recently had an excess of flowers and both thought of our grounds here at the GSPCA.
We cannot thank them enough as they have brought a huge amount of colour to the site and as with all flowers help many insects and especially the many bees we see around our wonderful site.
Recently nearly 30 children from Forest Primary School visited the GSPCA for a guided tour and to learn about the animals at the Shelter.
GSPCA Training and Community Officer was on hand to greet the many children off the buses who then enjoyed seeing and learning about many of the animals with the team at the GSPCA.
Tim said “We had a wonderful time showing the children from Forest Primary School the GSPCA and many of the animals in our care.”
“From dogs in our care to some of the hedgehogs they all seemed to enjoy their visit and learnt a lot from the GSPCA team.”
The GSPCA are hugely grateful to Waitrose who once again for their amazing support and help.
In May not only did they spend two days helping us at the GSPCA, they kindly donated a fantastic £560 towards much needed items to help with the work that was carried out.
Both Waitrose stores at Admiral Park and Waitrose Rohais have been hugely supportive to the work of the GSPCA and the many animals in our care.
Earlier this month Les Beaucamps High School during their Animal Magic Activities Week had a wonderful students which held a cake sale to raise funds for the GSPCA.
From all the team we are hugely grateful for the amazing £68 they raised which will help the 100’s of animals in our care.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “A huge thanks to the students from Les Beaucamps High School who raised an amazing £68 during their Animal Magic Activities Week by having a cake sale.”
The team at the GSPCA always love to meet and show those keen on helping animals and we are always incredibly humbled how wonderful those in their young years can be when it comes for caring for animals.
On the 20th June Tim Pellett GSPCA Community and Training Officer greeted pre-school boys and girls from Little Cottage Daycare who came bearing kind gifts for the animals.
Tim said “Last month I had the pleasure of greeting Little Cottage Daycare boys and girls last month.”
