Some advice on walking your dog in the snow from the GSPCA -
Place your dog in a sweater or dog coat to help keep your dog warm. If you have a white dog then a fluorescent coat is advisable and during the dark nights are ideal (these are on sale at the GSPCA Animal Shelter.) Don't forget to wrap up warm yourself.
Keep the walks short. Winter walks should not be as long as summer strolls. A couple of times around the block should suffice, but take care underfoot.
In September 2009 the States of Guernsey agreed to change the way in which tax relief is given in respect of donations to Guernsey Registered Charities (GRC).
Previously income tax relief was only available to individuals who made payments under an irrevocable Deed of Covenant in favour of a Guernsey Registered Charity for a period in excess of 3 years; no relief was available to Guernsey resident individuals in respect of noncovenanted donations to Guernsey charities.
In summary, the new system works as follows:
Can you help this old hen?
Blackie as staff have named this old hen came in as an injured hen last month and has been at the Shelter for just over 4 weeks.
She came in with an injured leg and this old dear who is very sweet is now ready for a new home.
Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said 'Blackie is so sweet.'
'She actually talks to you and loves company especially whilst she eats her breakfast.'
With cold weather coming and potential sleet and snow on the way the GSPCA want pet owners to consider all the animals of Guernsey. During a cold snap the GSPCA are on full alert, ready to deal with a variety of animals affected by the low temperatures.
But you can also do your bit to prevent animals suffering over the cold period.
Do you have a pond?
If you have a pond, make sure you check it every day for ice, as toxic gases can build up in the water of a frozen pond. These can kill fish or frogs that are hibernating at the bottom.

The GSPCA would like to thank Bluchip Vehicle Imports for their very kind donation of £250.
This year instead of sending out Christmas cards the team at Bluchip decided to donate the money to help animals in Guernsey and we are very thankful to them.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'Every penny donated to the GSPCA helps animals in Guernsey.'
'We are extremely grateful to Bluchip and thank them for their very kind donation which will help the hundreds of animals in our care.'
Too much turkey and Christmas pudding? Why not make the 2013 Itex Rotary walk part of your New Year get fit regime!
The walk has now become one of Guernsey's key fund raising events for local charities and attracts several hundred participants every year determined to complete the nearly forty mile route.
2013 is the sixteenth year that the walk has been held and each year significant sums of money have been raised. In 2012 the walk raised nearly £52,000 and with your help we will hit a similar level this year.
Next month the GSPCA will be celebrating 140 years caring for animals in Guernsey and we are appealing for pictures or video clips of the work during our 84 years at our current address or even the early 1900's or late 1800's that anyone that may have.
We have a very good record of our history back until the late 1920's but very few pictures.
Our records include annual reports back to 1929 and even a visitor book from the 1970's with some lovely signatories.
The GSPCA was founded in 1873 and to help celebrate 140 years caring for animals in Guernsey we are asking for your help.
There are many ways you, your school, group, work place, business can help celebrate.
The GSPCA week starts 11th February and celebrations will carry on until the 17th with our anniversary being Valentines Day the 14th February.
