Watch out for oiled birds around the coast after the rough weather

Submitted by GSPCA on 14:50, 16th Jan, 2014 | 0

With rough weather the GSPCA often finds itself rescuing and caring for oiled birds.

The reason we and other coastal animal charities see this increase is that crude oil that has settled on the sea bed gets stirred up and floats to the surface where the birds sadly get coated and then find it difficult to fly, preen, hunt and care for themselves.

We closely monitor the locations of where the birds are found and tidal movements in case they aren't isolated incidents.

We have had 7 oiled birds in the last week but sadly a Razorbill and 2 Guillemots were to weak to save.

First Volunteer Evening of 2014 an over flowing success

Submitted by GSPCA on 08:55, 16th Jan, 2014 | 0

Last night we held the first of our Volunteer Evenings of 2014 and it turned out to be the busiest we have ever held.

With over 30 new faces learning about the GSPCA and being inducted into how to work safely as a volunteer many laughs were had and serious notes learnt.

Despite a wet windy evening the 30 plus group were very cosy at the Shelter enjoying a hot drink while GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne welcomed them and gave the talk and presentation.

We are over the moon to report that Tilly and Topsy who up until recently were the longest stay cats at the GSPCA are now in their forever home.

That now means that Mitzi who arrived at the Shelter last April is now the longest stay cat at the GSPCA Animal Shelter in St Andrews.

At just over 9 years of age Mitzi needs a home where she can have her own space.

Second seal pup rescued in 24 hours

Submitted by GSPCA on 16:52, 10th Jan, 2014 | 0

Today the GSPCA rescued a second sick seal pup in less than 24 hours since the last.

Eden as she has been fondly named was seen earlier this afternoon in Havelet Bay on the Castle Pier next to Castle Cornet and was reported to the Animal Shelter.

Geoff George Animal Collection Officer rushed to the scene and arrived just after 2pm where he was faced with one of the thinnest pups we have had in many years.

Geoff quickly restrained the very ill pup and transported her to the GSPCA Wildlife Unit.

Wild Weather affects its first seal pup of 2014 in Guernsey

Submitted by GSPCA on 11:54, 9th Jan, 2014 | 0

Yesterday the GSPCA received calls along the south coast of a Grey Seal Pup which was first we believe seen in L'Eree.

At 4pm we had a call from Jamie Hooper who's from conservation group La Société Guernesiaise which had the pup reported to him at Pezeres Point.

Jamie was concerned for the pup and contacted us here at the GSPCA where we launched the rescue.

Geoff George Animal Collection Officer and Sarah Creasey the Education and Welfare Officer attended the scene where they found a very thin 3 week old grey seal pup.

Dog Tax for 2014 is due in Guernsey

Submitted by GSPCA on 18:17, 7th Jan, 2014 | 0

Owners of dogs in Guernsey are required to buy a licence from their parish authority for each dog they own.

Dog Tax is payable annually at a rate of £10.00 per dog and is renewable each January by 31st of the month.

Tax is due for all dogs over the age of 6 months - the only exceptions being dogs kept solely by a deaf or disabled person for their hearing or guidance (e.g. guide dogs for the blind or hearing dogs for the deaf).

Thank you to all that supported our Christmas Pop Up Shop and Late Night Shopping Nights

Submitted by GSPCA on 16:37, 2nd Jan, 2014 | 0

Thank you to all that supported the GSPCA Christmas Pop Up Shop and Late Night Stall on the Pollet during the Thursday nights in the run up to Christmas.

Well over £2,000 was raised between the two and we must thank OSA Recruitment who are based in Smith Street for this wonderful opportunity once again.

Helen Holmes ran the shop and said 'We had all sorts of goodies on sale and even a giant Dulux Old English Sheep Dog on auction, but don't worry he was a cuddly toy.'
