This week is Shrove Tuesday and many of us will shopping for our ingredients today. The GSPCA would like to remind everyone to think of the produce that you are going to use and please look to buy Animal Welfare friendly products such as free range eggs.
Although the EU legislation has forced many battery farms to improve their standards, chickens that live as free range birds have a much better quality of life.
Last night we held our second volunteer evening od 2014 and once again we overwhelmed with the fantastic turn out.
With 28 new faces popping along to find out about volunteering at the GSPCA Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager and Sarah Ozanne Animal Care Assistant were on hand.
After a presentation on the GSPCA, handouts, a few forms and learning hot to work safely at the Shelter by Steve Byrne, Sarah then sat down with each person interested in helping at the Shelter.
Yesterday Spike Productions invited the GSPCA to the OSA Recruitment Pop Up Shop where they were offering their services to the Animal Shelter and other charities to produce short powerful and engaging videos.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager popped down to their set up at the OSA Recruitment Pop Up Shop where Warren Mauger and Daniel d'Avoine from Spike Productions were all set up and very welcoming.
With all the recent sad news of the seabirds that have died around the Bailiwick recently the GSPCA are pleased to report that today 4 guillemots were successfully released back to the wild.
Alan (found at Vazon), Rachael (found at L'Eree), Chewy (found at Chouet) and Dave (found at Halfway) after 6 weeks of rehabilitation and care at the GSPCA were released below the fortification of Castle Cornet in St Peter Port.
We are always looking for volunteers to help at the Shelter in a variety of roles.
This Wednesday we are holding our second Volunteer Induction Evening of 2014.
After the last evening having an attendance of 33 new volunteers the GSPCA now has over 300 individuals from around Guernsey helping in the many roles available from dog walking to fund raising.
Following the death of a horse in Guernsey the GSPCA would like to draw horse owners attention to information released recently by the States Vet David Chamberlain:
The States Veterinary Officer would like to advise horse owners of the confirmed presence on the Island of the disease Equine Grass Sickness (EGS) which has been confirmed by laboratory analysis at the Animal Health Trust to be the cause of the death of a horse in the last 10 days
At the GSPCA we have had the busiest start to a year with seals and seabirds than the team can remember.
Currently we have 14 guillemots, 1 gannet and 2 seal pups at the Animal Shelter.
As you can imagine they are eating a healthy amount of fish and we really need your support.
From sandeels to sprats, herring and mackerel each animal is eating large numbers to help with their recuperation.
You can donate online through our Just Giving Page, by calling 01481 257261, by post or by popping into the Shelter in St Andrews.
