The GSPCA has been exceptionally busy with rabbits and baby bunnies in recent months.
With 25 currently at the Shelter we are still very busy and in need of homes.
Beckie Bailey GSPCA Animal Care Assistant and head of the bunnies said “We have had over 50 rabbits in our care recently and it has been very busy.”
“There also a number of diseases that affect rabbits here in Guernsey and we urge all rabbit owners to see their vet to ensure they are vaccinated and up to date with their medical needs.”
Last Thursday nearly 60 children from Vale Primary School visited the GSPCA for a guided tour and to learn about the animals at the Shelter.
GSPCA Training and Community Officer was on hand to greet the many children off the many buses who then enjoyed seeing and learning about many of the animals with the team at the GSPCA.
Tim said “We had a wonderful time showing the children from Vale Primary School the GSPCA and many of the animals in our care.”
Last week a member of the GSPCA team joined the Dementia Friendly Guernsey Champions training session took place on Wednesday 6th March at CAMHS in the PEH.
The trainers from Dementia Friendly Guernsey were Julie Bulpitt and Mark Guilbert and the GSPCA Training and Community Officer Tim Pellett went along to take part.
Tim said “We had a very interactive day last week at the Dementia Friendly Guernsey Champion training.”
At the GSPCA we love to hear from those animals rehomed from the GSPCA and recently we had an update from Sparkle.
We often help animals from around the Channel Islands and Sparkle came from Sark,
Sparkle went to her new home last month and as you may see from the picture she is very happy.
Her new owners said “We promised to send an update on Sparkle, who we adopted just over two weeks ago.”
“We are pleased to say that she has settled in really well and is purring a lot.”
The GSPCA are often looking for additional casual staff members to help with our increasingly busy front desk, the animals, guided tours, cleaning and to continue to develop our charity shop area.
Casual positions help cover the 7 day a week work, especially on weekends and bank holidays when the GSPCA is often extremely busy and very much with cover for holidays or illness.
This Tuesday at 630pm is our 3rd volunteer induction evening of 2019.
Open to all our induction evenings are your way to get involved with our varied and diverse work helping animals and the community in Guernsey.
You need to be at least 13 years old to help at the Shelter. If you are younger then you could still help. If you talk to your parents or guardians they may help you with fund raising for the Animal Shelter.
Last week the staff and volunteers at the GSPCA took part in training in Pet Bereavement thanks to the Guernsey Bereavement Service.
Sadly every day of the year staff and volunteers at the GSPCA help owners of pets that have died, whether recently or in the past and it is always hard to know if you are saying the right thing.

Today is #WorldWildlifeDay and with over 2000 wild animals through the GSPCA doors every year we need your support with our proposed new Wildlife Hospital which recently received planning permission.
This much needed facility is planned to replace a number of old buildings some which date back to the 1940’s.
Last year the GSPCA launched a fundraising campaign for the facility and now the planning has been granted the fundraising for the facility is a major priority.
Yesterday was a very sad day for the team at the GSPCA as we said farewell to Helen Holmes in her role who is without doubt one of the most diverse staff members at the GSPCA.
Helen has worked at the GSPCA for over 12 years and although has the title of Admin Manager you would often see her helping on animal departments, carrying out home visits, covering reception, helping at events, hand rearing animals, running the vet list, helping owners with their cremations and so many other duties that helped so many animals, their owners and the team throughout the GSPCA.
