Last month during the second week of April the GSPCA assisted for the second time with the IoD Management Shadowing.
The Institute of Directors or IoD in Guernsey has been placing Year 12 students (age 17) with local firms for over 20 years for a highly rewarding three day ‘ Management Shadowing Experience’. KPMG are proud to sponsor the programme and support the IoD in administering the scheme and providing valuable relationship management with over 70 firms to ensure the best possible experience for our candidates.
The GSPCA have been asked to help spread the word to help two cats find a very special home.
Here are the details –
Alfie (black) and Indie (grey) are two 7 year old, indoor cats looking for a new home.
Sadly, due to health issues the owner is moving to Perth, Australia and she cannot take them with her as they would not manage the trip and months in quarantine.
With over 5,000 signatories the change.org web page ‘Ban plastic carrier bags in Guernsey’ has gained a rapid growth of support and response since being launched.
The GSPCA help over 2000 sick and injured wild animals every year and often see litter related casualties.
From sea birds with fishing line caught in their beaks and stomachs to the rare sea turtles which are often casualties to ingested carrier bags thinking they are squid or jellyfish.
Tomorrow may well be a day off for many but at the GPSCA we have a busy day not only looking after 500+ animals and running two fund raising stalls in St Peter Port and St Andrews as well as running our ambulance, we will also be holding our fifth volunteer induction for those interested in helping at 630pm with GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “So far this year we have inducted 63 new volunteers through the induction evenings.”
Tomorrow around Guernsey we will be celebrating Liberation Day on Thursday 9th May and as part of the many celebrations the GSPCA will be out with our stalls in town and in St Andrews.
GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne will be manning a stall on Castle Emplacement in town and setting up from 7am and Michelle Champion will be at the Last Post from 10am setting up with both stalls packing up around 530pm.
Earlier this year the GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne celebrated his 40th year and helped raise funds for the GSPCA instead of cards and gifts.
Steve at the time decided that he had put on a little weight in recent years so made the decision to get fit and run the Guernsey Dairy Milk Run Half Marathon.

The GSPCA has recently seen a huge rise in the numbers of rabbits coming into our care.
With 25 rabbits looking for new homes and many more coming in over the next few days Easter was certainly a busy time at the GSPCA for those that care for the rabbits.
Many of the GSPCA rabbits looking for homes are now outside on our Bunny Hop Hill and we are not only appealing for new homes for those in our care but we are also appealing for funds to help build new enclosures for the rabbits at the GSPCA.
With Spring well underway the GSPCA are asking Islanders to please be mindful of the many fledglings popping up around the Bailiwick.
The GSPCA would like to remind that as a general rule, it is best to leave baby birds alone.
A baby bird has a greater chance of survival in the wild than it has being hand-reared by man as they learn to fend for themselves and how to forage for food by their parents.
Around 2 weeks after hatching young birds in your Bailiwick garden usually leave the nest, just before they learn how to fly.
Last Wednesday the GSPCA had a very special visit from Baroness Fookes DBE DL.
Baroness Janet Eveyln Fookes, DBE DL is a member of the House of Lords as well as an honorary Vice President of the RSPCA.
Baroness Fookes had a behind the scenes tour at the GSPCA meeting many of the team, animals and with an entourage from the media.
Baroness Fookes was accompanied by her good friend Madeline Dawson and they both thoroughly enjoyed their visit with their guide Steve Byrne the GSPCA Manager.
