The GSPCA has had to grow in recent years to meet the demands on our services and ensure the care and rescue of animals in need.
We are also sadly wishing well to two key members of our welfare team as Sarah Langlois moves to the UK and Lorna Chadwick starts a role with the States of Guernsey as an Animal Welfare Officer.
This has led to opportunities within the GSPCA team and what will be a new role as an Animal Care and Welfare Assistant role.
The 21st Torteval Scarecrow Festival was held on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st July 2024.
At the Torteval Parish Church islanders and visitors were able to walk the Scarecrow Trail (1½ hours approx) through some of Torteval’s delightful lanes.
This was the ninth year the GSPCA have taken part in this wonderful community event and we are hugely grateful to those at the home for the kind use of their front garden.
Having won the out of Parish category last year, this year we won another prize thanks to the amazing work of the GSPCA team.
On the 6th November 2023 a loggerhead turtle was washed up on the West Coast of Guernsey.
Barnacle Bill as the young turtle was called has since that time been in the care of the GSPCA.
On arrival she was very cold and weak but in the care of the Animal Shelter quickly improved and has been growing and putting weight on ever since.
She was microchipped back in November and the paperwork submitted for her travels home to warmer waters and although thankfully we received the Guernsey export paperwork very quickly thanks to the Guernsey States Vets.
On Sunday GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne was invited along to the Sark Pet and Dog Show.
The event was held in the field next to the Mermaid and was very well attended.
Steve said “A huge thank you to all involved for the very kind invite to the Sark Pet and Dog Show on Sunday.”
“The boat over was filled with visitors and their dogs and the event was a wonderful day with lots of fun classes from the egg and spoon race to the most colourful.”
On Saturday members of the GSPCA team were invited along with many islanders who do so much for our community.
GSPCA President John Knight, GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne and GSPCA Senior Animal Care Assistant attended the event.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Huge thanks to our Patron for the GSPCA and the host Lieutenant General Richard Cripwell CB, CBE who is the 122nd Monarch's representative to date here in Guernsey for putting on such a wonderful event for those that do such much good in the community.”

With the exceptionally warm weather it has been exceptionally busy at the GSPCA.
One of the biggest casualties being effected have been hedgehogs and hoglets and the GSPCA is appealing for islanders to do all they can to help our prickly friends.
From dehydrated baby hedgehogs to those covered in fly eggs and maggots we have helped 83 hedgehogs in the last month.
There are many ways to help us help the hedgehogs and here are a few ideas –
